Bozen & surroundings

A special landscape with Mediterranean lightness, a sunny climate, south-facing vineyards and breathtaking Alpine scenery.

Southern South Tyrol means sun, swimming, and wine but also mountains and fortresses. The charming landscape is perfect for hiking. Paths lead over gentle hills and through vineyards or from castle to castle. The vineyards and orchards are transformed into a sea of flowers in springtime and into a wonderful display of natural colours in the autumn. The majority of South Tyrolean wines grow here and the perfect accompaniment is the traditional “Marende”, a cold meal including Speck (traditional cured pork) and a special kind of crisp bread, which is available in many rustic inns and alpine huts.

The southern part of South Tyrol includes the capital city Bozen, the Sarntal valley with its many traditions, and the Ritten (a high plateau and summer resort area).
Two cultures meet in Bozen, the German and the Italian, and the combination lends the city its special charm. Bozen offers something for every taste. Museums with the oldest glacier mummy, the Iceman (Ötzi), high-class Italian shops, traditional stores, distinctive local restaurants and colourful markets, Gothic buildings, quaint alleys and ancient churches and castles. 

The Ritten was, and still is, the recreation area for Bozen. With the cable car, you can travel 1200 meters in 12 minutes and on arrival there is a wonderful panoramic view of the Dolomites. There are many footpaths and the natural phenomenon of the earth pyramids to explore, as well as numerous places offering refreshments to enjoy here.

In the Sarntal valley, near Bozen, traditions are very important and still kept alive.  Ancient handwork, traditional costumes and customs are still a significant part of everyday life. During the summer, the Sarntal is a favourite destination, to escape the heat of the city and to relax in unspoilt natural surroundings.

Near to Bozen, there are also the plateaux of Jenesien and Kohlern.  Like the Ritten, these hiking areas are accessible with a cable car in a few minutes.
